Fishing Extravaganza Itinerary

Kimberley Fishing Extravaganza – 4 nights

Broome to Doubtful Bay to Broome – Fly / Cruise / Fly

Please note this is a typical itinerary and a guide only.  Whilst your fishing adventure will be similar to the following itinerary, huge Kimberley tides will affect daily activities.  Fishing is planned around tidal movements and Mother Nature.

Day 1 – Glenelg River

Your Kimberley Fishing Adventure cruise will begin with an early morning flight where you will meet you crew in the heart of the Kimberley Coast. You will then be transferred by helicopter to land aboard MV Great Escape in the ancient wilderness and prime river-systems just waiting to be explored.  The flight is approximately 2 hours and the helicopter transfer between 20-30 minutes. Your crew will meet you on MV Great Escape for a warm welcome and a hearty brunch to begin the day.

The Captain will deliver a familiarization and safety briefing before setting off to explore the vast Glenelg River System.  This is a vast river system with very few boats venturing into the vicinity due to the strong tidal flows and the numerous underwater rocks around the mouth.  Our experienced skipper however will guide you through to the best fishing spots, tide dependent.  You could hope to hook up to Mangrove Jack, Fingermark and with luck on your side, the elusive Barra.

Day 2 – Sale River

The Sale River is one of the most scenic rivers in this area. Encompassing both tidal estuaries and spectacular sandstone gorges, we have a couple of exciting activities planned for this river. We will fish down the Sale River, where the fresh water meets the salt water. Feel free to flick around the rock bars as the fresh and salt mix – it has been known for hiding the dark, silvery 40 pounders!!!    We may even enjoy a BBQ lunch on a sandy beach under a rainforest canopy and perhaps some more fishing at Three Ways, depending upon how the day pans out.

Ruby Falls is a favourite Kimberley watering hole. Named after one of our Captain’s daughters’, it is a great place to relax, cool off and have a swim. Tide permitting, if anyone would like a hike, we can follow the freshwater back to where it heads underground.

Be excited about great estuary fishing with nice wide mud flats, speckled with rock bars. Working with the incoming and outgoing tides you may hook a mangrove jack, fingermark or salmon for dinner tonight!

Day 3 – Raft Point

Today you have some options to consider which will be tide dependent and based upon what the majority of the guests would like to do.  Your captain will be able to go through timings and your best options for the day.   You are surrounded by a truly picturesque landscape with an expansive body of water loaded with different fishing locations.  Today might be the day to set off down the mangrove lined creeks in search of succulent & delicious mud crabs for dinner.

This area, along the vast Kimberley coast, is also one of the better spots where we can find some clearer fast moving water and you can try your luck hooking up on sport fish giants, Trevally and Queenfish.  We might lose a few lures though as we’ll be fishing on light tackles.  Such fun, the thrill of the chase, then finally the catch!

We can hike up to majestic Raft Point to discover an ancient Aboriginal art gallery with views over Doubtful Bay that are breathtaking. Or you may like to just kick back and relax on the luxurious MV Great Escape and enjoy a drink in the cool spa.

Perhaps you would like to throw a cast around a secret fishing spot at Eagle Creek?  This is a relatively secluded creek discovered by the crew from MV Great Escape while exploring one day.  We don’t think many people know about it… AND on most occasions guests have been quite successful hooking a few barras, along with the likes of Mangrove Jack, Fingermark and Salmon.

The other option is we steam to one of the wonders of the Kimberley coast, “Montgomery Reef”. This is a spectacle to behold as the entire reef appears to rise from the ocean on a falling tide. With tidal differences of over 10 metres over a single spring tide cycle, nearly 5 metres of reef gradually emerges from the ocean, as water cascades down numerous channels.  Marvel at the waterfalls of Montgomery Reef in an early morning foray along this unusual reef structure. Discovered by Phillip Parker King in the early 1800’s this area has a rich history. Your crew will tell you interesting stories that relate to the reef. We also see large numbers of turtles grazing on the exposed seagrass, sharks and the odd dugong or two.

Our Chef will cook up a sumptuous meal to end the day’s proceedings and your Captain will discuss the next day’s activity options with you all.

Day 4 – Walcott Inlet

Today we’ll explore & fish Walcott Inlet, where our timing will need to be exact to enter the narrow inlet.  Witness amazing volumes and whirlpools of water, as the tide rushes through.  As we explore further in our tenders you’ll delight in the abundant bird life, ancient boab trees and Livistonia palms framing your river pathway.

A huge body of water and we will be targeting estuary fishing again

Throw a lure over the side of the tender and you may encounter, Threadfin Salmon, Fingermark or if you’re lucky a juicy silvery Barra!

You will have the option of taking an amazing aerial chopper flight over the infamous Horizontal Waterfalls today. Long regarded as one of the worlds natural wonders, “The Horries” are a fast-moving tidal flow through two narrow, closely aligned gorges of the McLarty Range, located in Talbot Bay. The direction of the flow reverses with each change of tide. As tides in the Kimberley can reach 10 metres, a peak tide gives rise to a significant difference in the sea level on either side of each gorge.  Witness the spectacular water movements in this untouched rugged wilderness.  If you are into photography you will love this thrill with the doors off!

Day 5 – Broome

Departure by helicopter will be at approximately between 7.30 am and 9.00 am. You will land at the Kimberley airstrip and be transferred to Broome by a fixed wing charter flight. If you would like to experience an early morning activity, the crew will be more than happy to discuss what options you have available. We will just have to make sure you are packed and ready for when the transfer departs to fly you back to Broome.

What You Can Catch

Throughout the cruise you will find yourself on numerous excursions in remote river tributaries, hunt for the elusive Barramundi, and also target other species such as Mangrove Jack, Fingermark, Bream, Queenfish, Salmon along with a Mackerel.
