More about our resident Fishing Guru – James Brechin
James grew up in South Australia and from a young age he developed a love for fishing and being by the sea. At age 11, he was taught by his grandfather to catch herring, garfish & squid from the piers on picturesque Yorke Peninsula. His teenage years were spent chasing King George whiting from a boat and yellowfin whiting from the flats in the Gulf of St. Vincent.
James completed a Bachelor of Agricultural Science in 1993 and was posted to the Eyre Peninsula. It was here his fishing horizons were truly broadened. There were countless surf beaches to explore and numerous rocky platforms to fish from. The thought of landing huge Australian salmon or the elusive mulloway was ever present.
In 1999, James was fortunate to be involved in a family run rural business on Kangaroo Island. The fishing and exploring options in this pristine part of the world were staggering. A true highlight was the regular occurrence of trapping huge freshwater marron.
In recent years, James has undertaken extended road trips to both Western Australia and the Northern Territory to follow his passion for fishing. The highlight was towing his boat from South Australia to Perth, then up the coast to the Kimberley’s and then on to the Northern Territory. It was on this trip that James realised that to maximise the fishing potential in these regions, local knowledge and remoteness are a huge help. Along the way, James was able to fish with a number of people from different backgrounds and there was not a day he did not enjoy. In a nutshell, James just loves the thought of likeminded fishers targeting and landing their dream species whether it be land based or from a boat.
