Kimberley Coastal Camp – Kimberley WA
Huge tidal rivers, mangrove creeks, estuaries, offshore reefs and islands will be just some of the different scenic backdrops to your day’s fishing. Professional and highly experienced guides know all the best fishing spots.
Enjoy the unique camp with its special services and food — well known for both quality and quantity. Since the camp also caters to non-fishing guests, you can bring your partner or friends to share this beautiful part of the world and be assured that they will also have a memorable holiday.
Scattered amongst the red sandstone and native grasses, 6 spacious guest gazebos offer privacy and comfort. Taking full advantage of the tranquil views over the Admiralty Gulf your ‘room with a view’, is elegantly furnished featuring king size or twin single beds fitted with Sheridan linen, screened walls, handmade timber furniture, reading lamps and a ceiling fan. There are shared bathroom facilities.
The Main Camp
Open to the gentle sea breezes, the nucleus of Kimberley Coastal Camp is known simply as ‘the shed’. A large open sided pavilion hand built using recycled timber with high raked ceilings, this is the ideal place to discuss the day’s adventures, relax with a book from the library, enjoy great music, or just listen to the waves lapping on the shore.
A large rustic dining table is the scene for those wonderful gourmet meals Kimberley Coastal Camp is famous for. The swimming pool with stunning water views is an ideal place to cool off at the end of the day with an icy drink in hand, prior to entrée served with a Kimberley sunset.
Kimberley Coastal Camp has experienced and knowledgeable guides to ensure your northern fishing adventure exceeds all expectations. Whether it is tropical sports fishing incorporating lure casting, salt water fly fishing, or the use of natural baits this is wilderness fishing at its best.
Kimberley Coastal Camp supplies quality Shimano tackle on an unconditional basis. Generally 8, 10 and 15kg baitcasting and spin reels. Or you can bring your own if you prefer.
A purpose-built and surveyed 28 foot boat, “Warabi”, has a lot to offer our guests who like to fish, but would rather not stand for long hours under the tropical sun in a dinghy. Its special design allows for easy manoeuvring in tight and shallow spots, has lots of fishing and casting space and has ample shade as well. There is also a 2011 new custom built Westerberg Minjau Barra boat powered by twin Honda outboards and features a centre rear console and plenty of casting and fishing space at the bow. Fully surveyed at 6 metres this vessel is ideal for mangroves and blue water alike. A new custom built tender is a sturdy little ‘Mudskippa’ and ideal for lure casting and mud crabbing.
What You Can Catch
The majority of anglers are amazed by the variety of species, including barramundi, black jew, mangrove jack, fingermark, javelin fish, threadfin salmon (giant and blue), trevally (giant, golden and spotted), queenfish, mackerel, tuna, coral trout, cod and blue bone. Mud crabs and oysters also inhabit these pristine waters.
The fishing is conducted on a catch and release basis, with only those fish destined for the table being retained from the days catch.
Getting there is in itself an experience. Kimberley Coastal Camp has 2 means of arrival. You may find yourself flying by light aircraft to the Mitchell Plateau over a mosaic of Mangrove lined creeks with their octopus like tentacles, azure coastal waters and spectacular islands, breathtaking gorges, rivers and water falls, finishing off with an exhilarating helicopter transfer landing right on our beach. Or a spectacular float plane experience with an impressive water landing directly in front of this secluded hideaway.
For the adventurous, travelling the world renowned Gibb River Road it is possible to meet our helicopter transfers, leaving your vehicle and camper in safety at the Mitchell Plateau.
Commercial flights operate to our most popular departure point, Kununurra, daily, and other departure points, Broome and Darwin. Check Qantas, Airnorth, Skywest and Virgin Australia for flight options.
Season operates from late March to mid October each year. We recommend fishing the neap tides as the water is clearer and calmer and the boats more accessible throughout the day. Neap tides offer a wider variety of fishing options such as flats casting/ sight fishing, trolling, bait fishing and bottom fishing.
Spring tides can have up to 7 metres of tidal movement which can result in choppy water and limited boat availability however some spring tides can easily be worked around. If you speak to us about your preferred travel dates we can let you know what the tides are doing during that time.
